Methane seeps, where gas escapes from the seafloor into the ocean above, support amazing deep-sea habitats. These habitats are built by unique microbes that harness energy from chemicals, like methane and sulphide, in the absence of any light. Through this, these microbes trap harmful greenhouse gases, make structures that provide homes for animals, and create food that supports an abundance of life. Scientists have been discovering dynamic and diverse methane seep habitats along the Hikurangi Margin off the east coast of Aotearoa New Zealand. Now, they are working to understand the vulnerability of these environments to human activities. [Video produced by Pascale Otis]

Farming sheep, beef and a positive mindset. Emma Crutchley's family have been farming on Puketoi Station in the Māniatoto since 1939. They've had to adapt to many issues outside of their control over this time. Keeping a positive mindset is helping them get their heads around the latest challenge - greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. [Funding - MPI / NZAGRC, Director & Camera - Dave Allen]

Landslides happen in the ocean just like they happen on land and this multi-disciplinary research expedition is looking at what that may mean for the waters off the Taranaki Coast. Acquisition of new marine geophysical and sedimentological data is critical to address this knowledge gap and help include submarine landslide-generated tsunami in future New Zealand tsunami hazard assessments. Produced for the 48 hours film festival competition 2024, by Dave Allen & Pascale Otis (team "Elves")

This is not the type of project we normally work on, but we thought it would be fun to put a film together in only 48 hours. "Strings Attached" is a heartwarming tale of a bird puppet inadvertently left behind by a family with children as they depart Wellington, New Zealand. Forgotten and alone, the bird wanders the city streets, eventually finding itself in a nightclub where it encounters Nippy, a seemingly friendly character who turns out to be anything but. The short film is a delightful and whimsical adventure that reminds us of the power of resilience, friendship, and the enduring hope of finding love in the most unexpected places.
